When the curiosity of two worlds meets in a field of Eternal Fortunes
I just finished a new 4K wallpaper (3840x2160) for my own monitor and I liked how it turned out enough to share it here. Free download at the bottom of the post.
The piece is a self-indulgent crossover between two things I love: Reg, the protagonist of Made in Abyss (my favorite anime) and Elliot, one of the boys from my own BL visual novel, Camp Arcadia.
The "what if": Elliot, isekai'd into the Abyss
The premise is a hypothetical isekai. Imagine Elliot: the curious, gamer-brained kid from Camp Arcadia who narrates the world like a video game tutorial, getting yanked out of summer camp and dropped somewhere on the upper layers of the Abyss. No HUD, no save points, no Camp Daddy to ask for help. Just the wind, the trees, and a quiet meadow of Eternal Fortunes where he lands face-first into an encounter with someone… not entirely human.
What I wanted to capture in this scene is the moment right before either of them speaks. Elliot tilts his head, fascinated by the helmet, by the metal arm, by the seams where artifice meets boy. Reg leans in too, equally puzzled by this pale, skinny kid in shorts who clearly doesn't belong on this layer. Two curiosities pointed at each other. No threat. No hierarchy. Just the small, suspended wonder of two boys realizing the other is also a mystery.
The meadow is loosely inspired by the Field of Eternal Fortunes from Made in Abyss, the soft white blooms, the waterfall in the distance, the unreasonable peace of a place that shouldn't be peaceful. Studio Ghibli–adjacent lighting. Late afternoon. The kind of light that makes you forget, for a second, what's at the bottom of the hole.
If you don't know the characters
- Reg — the boy-shaped robot from Made in Abyss by Akihito Tsukushi. Helmet, extending arms, that quiet, earnest face. If you don't know the series yet: please go read/watch it. It is one of the most beautiful and devastating works in modern anime.
- Elliot — one of the campers from Camp Arcadia, my free BL / yaoi visual novel currently in development. He's the youngest of the group: pale, glasses, dyed-silver hair, lives inside video games in his head. If anyone in the Camp Arcadia cast would willingly fall into the Abyss out of pure curiosity, it's him.
